The Brain & Behavior

Back to the Central Nervous System…brain basics Appearance Identify longitudinal, lateral, & central fissures.

Brain basics Size? The adult human brain weighs about 3 pounds (1,300-1,400 g). Heaviest ever? 5 lb. 1.1 oz. The adult human brain is about 2% of the total body weight, but uses 20% of oxygen & blood. The total surface area of the cerebral cortex is about 2500 sq. cm (~2.5 ft2) . Smell? Blue cheese!

Hindbrain Spinal cord Medulla: breathing, heart rate, cross-over Pons: coordinates movement, sleep/dreams Cerebellum: balance, coordination

Hindbrain

Midbrain Reticular Activating System (RAS) Arousal: keeps you awake Alerts the brain

Forebrain

Forebrain Thalamus: sensory relay center (all except smell) Hypothalamus: eating, drinking, body temperature, sexual behavior, reward (“pleasure center”), fight or flight; HOMEOSTASIS

Forebrain: Limbic system

Limbic system Hippocampus: Memory formation Amygdala: Anger, aggression, & fear

Cortex: lobe divisions

Motor

Sensory

Association areas

Lobes of the Cerebral Cortex Directions: For each statement, identify the lobe that has the primary responsibility for that activity or experience. Frontal Lobe Parietal Lobe Occipital Lobe Temporal Lobe

Lobes of the Cerebral Cortex D D. Temporal Listening to music Waving your arm Feeling gloves on your hands Viewing a sunset Hearing your name being called Making plans for dinner Seeing your friend’s face Experiencing an itch A. Frontal B. Parietal C. Occipital Note the letters on each of the lobes. After each statement, the next click will reveal the correct response. D. Temporal A. Frontal C. Occipital B. Parietal
