Presentation transcript:

Commas – the rules Why have the commas been used in these sentences? “Mr Jones, our next door neighbour, threw our ball back.” “Last night I ate pasta, salad and garlic bread for dinner.” Commas are used before and after EXTRA INFORMATION in a sentence. The sentence would make sense without the extra information. Commas are used to separate information in a LIST.

Commas By the end of this lesson I: Will understand the rules for using commas Should understand how to use commas to add pace to a story Key words: Comma pace

Commas How have the commas been used in these extracts from Frankenstein? I started from my sleep with horror; a cold dew covered my forehead, my teeth chattered, and every limb convulsed: when, by the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window shutters, I beheld the wretch – the miserable monster whom I had created. I took refuge in the courtyard belonging to the house which I inhabited; where I remained during the rest of the night, walking up and down in the greatest agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing each sound as if it were to announce the approach of the demoniacal corpse to which I had so miserably given life.

Review What two rules for using commas did we learn today? What was the effect of using commas in our horror stories?
