Presentation transcript:

Informal & K-12 science education Goal: provide a context & appreciation for the hydrology of the greater San Joaquin basin, including source, quantity & quality Approach: GLOBE program engages K-12 students in environmental measurements & learning Experiential kiosk in visitor center(s) engages public in exploring hydrologic questions UC Merced Service Learning program engages undergraduate students in projects that support the program SNRI, UC Merced

Program components: GLOBE GLOBE site(s) in SJRP & other parts of greater San Joaquin basin … mentor & support existing sites develop new sites at key locations Martha Conklin & Sarah May from UCM past support from Fresno school district close link with Sierra Nevada Hydrologic Observatory, which will make long-term scientific measurements SNRI, UC Merced

Program components: science kiosk Locate in SJRP visitor center? Place in other visitor centers, e.g. YNP Possible themes the source of valley water is mountain snow stream flow is measured across the basin groundwater & surface water are connected water quality is measured throughout the basin (GLOBE) there is an involved system of water withdrawals & use in the basin (including canals) Very visible – high quality science exhibit SNRI, UC Merced

Program components: service learning Important role in supporting program by designing smaller program elements on a year-to-year basis data & information systems for project management & tracking enhancements to exhibit(s) SNRI, UC Merced
