Why has AFS developed this tool? UN’s SDG 4, Goal 4.7: Global Citizenship Education OECD’s PISA Global Competence Framework + CoE’S Competences for Democratic Culture In response AFS launched a new and free tool, AFS Global Competence Readiness Index for Schools. Mary: Increasingly governments, education experts and employers acknowledge that today’s world is marked by complexities and challenges that require innovative approaches to education and learning—starting in the classroom. What you get back.. You are at the beginning of your journey towards developing global citizens. You have work ahead of you as your staff and student body appears to reflect little diversity ……. Global competence (or similar) is not part of the national or school curriculum or if it is, teachers don’t have the necessary tools to implement it. You are aware of the need for intercultural education and interest in doing more but might lack institutional support to do so. You have taken part in some concrete …………. In addition to that, your school might have either hosted or sent students in the past but it is not a regular practice beyond individual participants’ interest. Your school may have …………. In summary, your school is just beginning to develop global competence. You can build on this to start small then provide progressively greater opportunities for your teachers and students to develop their global competence. Mary to introduce

Recommendations To grow your work on developing global citizens: Learn more about what global competence is and how it can benefit your school. Explore the local, regional or national regulations around the topic and how it can be included in your school curriculum. Add the topic to the next staff meeting agenda and boost reflection among all the actors involved in the school (students, teachers, parents and principles). Reach out to other schools leading the way in global competence to learn more about their best practices and get support in becoming a more global school. Reach out and collaborate with local associations and institutions working in the field who can provide support. Explore materials and sites on global competence that can be helpful in your classroom/school. Create a cross-sectional/multidisciplinary taskforce to design a project/strategy (include experts, and external organizations such as AFS). This plan will help you set goals for the short, medium and long term. Mary to introduce

They are able to explore their own role as global citizens and changemakers. WHY:It increases the effect of AFS being viewed as a leading international educational NGO advancing global citizenship education.
