“Inferno” Dante Alighieri Canto 10

They are still in the 6th circle, where heretics are buried Dante is asking Virgil if people who lie in sepulchers could be seen, and why they do not have guardian Virgil explains to him those people rejected the idea of immortality of the soul, and they can not come out until last judgement Dante really wants to see which people from Florence are in that circle

At one point a voice came out of the sepulcher telling Dante his accent sounds like he is from Florence Virgil tells Dante that voice is Farinata, and Dante will be able to see him from waist up. Dante had to be careful how he talks to him

Farinata asked who were Dante’s ancestors Dante felt need to be really honest with him and told him the whole story Farinata realized their families were enemies

Another shadow came out That shadow was Cavalcanti whose son was Dante’s friend Cavalcanti asked Dante why his son was not with him Dante used past tense to explain him and the shadow thought his son was dead He got sad and went down to his sepulcher

Farinata and Dante talked about what happened between their families He predicts Dante’s exile from Florence Farinata tells Dante people who are in that circle do not know the present on earth, they can only see the future. He asked him to tell Cavalcanti that his son is not dead

Virgil told Dante they have to go Dante asked Farinata who are other people from Florence that are in that circle and Farinata named two more Dante got upset with the prediction of his exile Virgil tells him he will learn about his future from Beatrice
