UNIT 1 Principles of Government & Political Systems

What is Government? a group of people who have the power to make and enforce laws for a country or area

Secure the Blessings of Purpose of Government Form a more perfect Union Establish Justice Insure Domestic Tranquility Provide for the Common Defense Promote General Welfare Secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves & our Posterity

Why is Government needed? Settle Conflicts Protects the community by creating public policy, budgets, & relationships Plan for the future Provide Services Keep Order

Types of Governments: Monarchies Absolute Monarchy (dynasty) Constitutional Monarchy Democratic government with an existing monarchy for symbolic & ceremonial reasons. Leaders: King/ Queen or Tyrant Monarchial Government run by harsh/ cruel leader, usually born. Vocab: ABERRATION Something that differs from the norm.

Types of Governments Vocab: Abhor To hate, detest Aristocracy Rules Monarchial government with council that works for the interest of the people. Oligarchy Government controlled by a group, that put their interests over public needs.

Types of Governments:Democracies Direct Democracy Vocab: Abide To put up with, to remain. Representative/ Indirect Democracy (republic) Democratic government with elected representatives that express the views of the people.

Types of Governments Totalitarian/ Authoritarian Control all aspects of peoples lives Plans the economy & society Ban political opposition Regulate production on industries & farms Suppress individual freedoms Choose people’s beliefs & associates Control media Use propaganda/ firewalls & violence as a scare tactic Vocab: Abject Wretched, pitiful

Fascism/ Nationalism/ Totalitarian Democracy Communism Strictest form Fascism/ Nationalism/ Totalitarian Democracy led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism. Leaders: Dictatorship or a group Complete control Take power by force, unless they are placed in charge because of desperate measures.

Theocracy/ Totalitarian Democracy Types of Government Theocracy/ Totalitarian Democracy Government run by religion that outlaws all opposition parties Socialism Government that satisfies citizen’s needs, & end economic risk & exploitation; by having a classless society that gives democratic rights with elected representatives

Types of Government Anarchist No government, to where chaos usually forms
