A new report on Cities of tomorrow

Key messages There is a European model of cities The European model of sustainable urban development is under threat There are opportunities to turn the threats into positive challenges New forms of governance are essential to respond to these urban challenges http://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/conferences/citiesoftomorrow/index_ en.cfm

Challenges do not respect administrative borders they need to be formulated to concur with our overall objective of sustainable territorial development with liveable cities all across Europe Challenges do not respect administrative borders Challenges cannot be addressed individually their interrelations and contradictions need to be properly understood The administrative city needs to be complemented by a flexible functional geography / urbanised space Multi-scalar governance as a key challenge

Outcomes A final report has been published on 24/10/ 2011 EN, FR, PL already available CN, DE, ES, PT, JP will follow Summary and conclusions in all languages Presentations and proceedings of three workshops Thematic issue papers on urban environmental challenges economic challenges social challenges governance challenges Mapping of urban foresights 10 case studies of “Good policies and practices of cities tackling challenges”
