The rules and how to identify them by Molly Veitch-Hodges plurals The rules and how to identify them by Molly Veitch-Hodges

“Sh” “ff” and “ch” Plurals don’t always just end in “s”. If they end in a hissing sound, like “lunch”, end in “es”. Here are some examples: Lunch-> lunches Fish->fishes

“y” or “y” with a vowel before If you have a “y” on the end then change the Y to I and add ES. If it has a vowel before the Y you just add S A few examples: boy->boys hippy->hippies puppy->puppies donkey->donkeys

Odd ones out Some words don’t follow the rules; you have to change the whole word (or not!) A few examples: child->children sheep->sheep goose->geese dice-> di

Plurals that end in “f” If a word ends in “f” you must change the ”f” to a “v” before adding a “es”. A few examples: Loaf->loaves Thief->thieves Wolf->wolves

Quiz Write down the plural of the following: Lunch Man Emphasis Scissors Dress Dice

answers lunches men emphases scissors dresses di
