GTC Scotland Professional Update: a positive innovation for teachers Implications for Probationer Teachers after Full Registration

Professional Update – a summary The Professional Update process requires fully registered teachers to: update their registration details update their knowledge and skills through ongoing PRD update their registration status by confirming this with GTC Scotland every 5 years The Professional Update process requires employers to: provide a Professional Review and Development scheme which meets national criteria and supports teachers in completing the Professional Update process; this process requires to be validated by GTC Scotland

Key principles of Professional Update In Professional Update, teachers will ... ... have a responsibility to consider their own development needs ... have an entitlement to a system of supportive PRD ... be able to confirm that they are maintaining the high standards required of a teacher

Some important starting points about Professional Update Effective and supportive PRD: should be led by the teacher’s self-evaluation should be supportive and challenging with reviewers using coaching approaches should help teachers keep their knowledge, skills and abilities up to date is not just a meeting, but an ongoing process needs careful preparation

Professional Update and Competence Competence is not a big issue: teaching standards are high in Scotland Professional Update is not related to competence procedures Competence cases will continue to operate in line with the agreed framework Professional Update is about supporting teachers in developing their knowledge, skills and abilities
