2.1Relations and Functions 2.2 Direct Variation Learning Target: I can graph relations. I can identify functions. I can write and interpret direct variation equations.

Get Ready: Solve each equation for y. 1. 12y = 3x 2. -10y = 5x

Example 1: Determine whether y varies directly with x.

1. 2.

Example 2: Determine whether y varies directly with x Example 2: Determine whether y varies directly with x. If so, find the constant of variation. Rule: If the equation is written as y=kx, then it does vary directly with x. Ex. 𝑦=3𝑥 If the equation is written as y=kx+c, then it does not vary directly with x. Ex. 𝑦=2𝑥+4

Problems: 𝑦=8𝑥 𝑦= 1 2 𝑥 𝑦=3𝑥+5 𝑦=4𝑥−1 *Remember these are yes or no answers.

Example 3: Find the missing value. 1. If y = 9 when x = -15, what is y when x = 21? 2. If y = 15 when x = 3, what is x when y = 60?

You do: Determine whether y varies directly with x. 𝑦=8𝑥 𝑦=−2𝑥+4 Find the missing value. 3. If y = -21 when x = 3, what is x when y = -14?
