Simple Carbohydrates Sugars  found in fruits, milk, vegetables, candy, etc. Broken down quickly by our body 2 types: monosaccharides – single sugars disaccharides – 2 monosaccharides

Complex Carbohydrates starches and fibers  potatoes, beans, celery, etc. Take longer for our body to break down polysaccharides chains of monosaccharides

Monosaccharides a single sugar Made up of carbons hydrogens oxygens 1:2:1 ratio ex: glucose, fructose, galactose

Disaccharides pairs of monosaccharides taken apart by hydrolysis put together by condensation Ex: maltose, sucrose, lactose

Polysaccharides Chains of monosaccharides (more than 3) taken apart by hydrolysis put together by condensation Ex: glycogen, cellulose, starch, chitin

Glucose provides energy for the brain, muscles, and tissues glucose is immediate energy Simplest sugar

Glucose mild sweet flavor known as blood sugar essential energy source found in every disaccharide and polysaccharide
