New England Colonies New England Colonies – British colonies on northeastern Atlantic coast: Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire Puritans – Anglicans who wanted to fix, or “purify” Church of England

New England Colonies “Evil Times” – time when Puritans were persecuted in England Puritans decided to come to America Settled in Massachusetts Bay Colony where land was cheap Came for religious freedom

New England Colonies John Winthrop was first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritans tried to keep other religions out Great Migration – 1629 – 1640, 15,000 people came to Massachusetts; most to Boston
