The Venerable Bede The first English church historian. He was a monk and is well known as an author and scholar. “Ecclesiastical history of the English People” Bede is also called “father of English history”.

The spread of Christianity Began at the end of the 6th century. Before the Anglo-Saxons had been pagans. The growth of big landed estates. Monasteries became centres of intellectual activity Educational opportunities

Canterbury Cathedral The history goes back to 597AD In 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the Cathedral Attractes thousands of pilgrims

Canterbury Cathedral is the oldest church still in use. Rowan Williams, is 104th in the line of succession from Augustine.

Nearly 2,000 services are held each year The Cathedral offers a warm welcome to all visitors
