Presentation transcript:

Performing speeches Date: Objectives Write a speech with the intentions of reading it aloud. Be able to work solo before introducing team mechanics. Today’s motion – take it down and answer Q. ‘At the end of the day, exams are a reflection of how good you are at doing exams. They don't really measure or reflect the intelligence of the student’. Do you agree or disagree – write two reasons. We’ll share then. Write other people’s points (this will help later)

Just to check – did we get Exams as memory tests. Being smart in different ways. Albert Einstein failed Math in school and is still considered one of the greatest geniuses of all time. . One last thing before we start the task – you’re going to be saying what you’re writing here. Think about words you don’t want to say. I wouldn’t use the word ‘Worcestershire’ ‘Wuss-ter-sheer’ sauce.

Write the speech in class, using the structure from before. Choose sides. Proposition – exams bad. Opposition – exams good. Introduction – formal, why and what are you discussing? Definition – Exams, students, intelligence, good, measure. Metaphors, similes? Reference – who does this affect, what might people say? Point 1 – what, why, refute, ask a question. Point 2. Point 3. Conclusion – summarise and thank audience. Before giving the speeches, there’s some biological and psychological facts to discuss.

Before giving speech – some advice. Biology – the diaphragm opens up when you’re back is straight and you’re head is up. Looking confident actually makes you speak better. Getting nervous doesn’t help. Take a breath, think of something funny and relax. You’re instincts shall be to rush through it as fast as possible. Fight this. Whatever bad thing you imagine could happen, no one will remember it tomorrow. We’re all egotistical and selfish in that way.

Cooldown question: I’ve given some advice for talking in front of people. What advice would you give each other? Or Imagine a first year coming into class doing this. What advice would you give him?

Homework: Research one fact online to put into your speech. Practise saying your speech aloud. Best way to research – Google the question you’re asking. Are exams necessary, are exams bad? Some news site somewhere has statistics proving whatever you ask. Tomorrow, we’ll do a warm-up, take down a few notes on how to speak with a flow and then give those speeches.
