Growth Mindset: Video https://youtu.be/JC82Il2cjqA

What is a Growth Mindset? Developed 30 years ago by Dr Carol Dweck who became interested in children's failure She noticed that some rebound whilst others become devastated by the smallest set back. Developed the phrases fixed and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. https://youtu.be/wh0OS4MrN3E

The Science Bit! Recent research in neuroscience have shown us that the brain is far more malleable than we ever knew. Research on brain plasticity has shown how connectivity between neurons can change with experience With practice, neural networks grow new connections, strengthen existing ones and build insulation that speeds transmission of impulses We can increase our neural growth by the actions we take such as, using good strategies, asking questions, practising etc. People who believe their brain can grow begin to behave differently. Research discovered that children who were taught that intelligence is malleable and shown how the brain grows with effort, showed an increase in Maths grades (Lisa Blackwell 2007, Columbia University.) Beliefs about intelligence. Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset Ability is fixed, probably at birth Little if anything they can do to improve it Ability comes from talent "it all comes from the genes" e.g. "I can't do maths/sport/art" Intelligence is an endowment Ability and success are due to learning Learning requires time and effort Difficulty means try harder, try another approach, seek help Intelligence can be cultivated, developed and enhanced
