G.A.T.E Gifted And Talented Education Parent Meeting 2018-2019

What is GATE? “Gifted and Talented Education” The term “gifted and talented” in general means a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity……

All students have the right to experience education in such a way that complements their unique learning style. At the same time, instruction should respectfully challenge students to think in deeper & more complex ways, igniting and enhancing their innate abilities to communicate, collaborate, create and think critically. ~Ayodele Coker

Characteristics of Gifted Students Crave knowledge Good problem-solving abilities Advanced mathematical ideas Extensive vocabulary Sensitivity Compassion for others Become completely absorbed in a task Preference for older playmates Question everyone and everything Are intolerant of others who don’t “get it” Think outside of the box Do very well or very poorly in school NOT EXCLUSIVE OF GIFTED STUDENTS

No Real Conclusion… The goal in planning for the gifted and talented learner is to challenge them academically, similar to how their low-achieving and at-grade level peers would be challenged. Differentiating for students is a vital part in seeing success across the playing field in classrooms. Allow students take ownership over their learning so that they make personal connections that will likely spread to others and contribute to their college and career readiness and success.  There’s no telling what will come of our gifted and talented students when critical thinking and creativity take their full course.

GATE Budget A small allocation of about $48 dollars per student is given to each site plus a base allocation of 1,000. So, our budget for the year is about $2,800.

Enrichment GATE Activities/Events Odyssey of the Mind Science Fair Projects Spelling Bee Classroom Technology After school GATE Enrichment 1-2 times per month on Wednesday, starting in November, schedule to be sent home. STEAM based themes with monthly focus on each area. STEAM Showcase in the spring

Thank you for attending!!!
