PARTS OF AN ESSAY BILGI WRITING AND LEARNING CENTER

INTRODUCTION The first paragraph of your essay Since it is the first section of your essay, it should attract the reader.

BUT... HOW CAN I ATTRACT MY READERS? YOU CAN USE SOME METHODS IN YOUR INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH

WHAT ARE THESE METHODS? Asking Questions Turn about The funnel method

How can I do it? Any examples? Asking Questions Use questions to attract the attention of your readers!!!! How can I do it? Any examples? Topic: Do you think plastic surgery is necessary? What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you happy with your reflection or would you rather look different? People have always tried to look more beautiful and more attractive. They tried dressing up nicely, wearing accessories, and putting on make-up. And nowadays plastic surgery is in fashion. However, plastic surgery should only be necessary if it really affects people physically and psychologically.

Turn about Start with the idea, belief or opinion that is the opposite of your own opinion or thesis. First present the opposite opinion, use "but, however or although", and present your own point of view. How can I do it? Any examples? Topic: Do you think using mobile phone too much is harmful? Some people believe that using mobile phones may cause many problems. If people use them all the time, they may cause many health problems. A person who uses the mobile phone more than necessary may also disturb the other people around them. Although mobile phones have disadvantages, many people benefit from them especially when they need to communicate in emergencies and access information more easily.

The funnel method Provide some general, common sense knowledge on the topic. Each following sentence is more focused. Your funnel should not be too large, because you never will be able to narrow it down.

How can I do it? Any examples?

THESIS STATEMENT

What is thesis statement? The thesis statement tells the reader what the writer thinks about the topic. It gives the topic of the essay and the controlling idea. It is generally the last sentence of introduction paragraph A strong thesis statement should give an idea that can be discussed and explained with supporting ideas. By reading the thesis statement, the reader can see clearly what the essay will discuss and how it will be organized.

Thesis Statement Rules: What IS and IS NOT a thesis statement? 1. A thesis statement must be a statement, not a question. 2. A thesis statement must be a complete sentence. This means that it must have a subject and a verb with a tense. 3. A thesis statement cannot be a simple statement of fact. A fact doesn’t need any support, and therefore, you cannot write an essay about it. There has to be an opinion. 4. A thesis statement must state the controlling idea. This means that your position on the topic is clear; you cannot simply announce the topic. 5. A thesis statement should have only one controlling idea.

CONCLUSION

BUT HOW?

The conclusion is the last paragraph of an essay. It does three things: It signals the end of the essay It summarizes the main points It leaves the reader with the writer’s final thoughts on the subject.

Thank you...
