KBSR: AIMS & OBJECTIVES WEEK 13 LECTURE
AIMS OF KBSR The Primary School Mathematics Curriculum aims to build pupils’ understanding of number concepts and their basic skills in computation that they can apply in their daily routines effectively and responsibly ………
AIMS OF KBSR ……. in keeping with the aspirations of a developed society and nation, and at the same time to use this knowledge to further their studies.
Knowledge & Understanding Know and understand the concepts, definition, rules sand principles related to numbers, operations, space, measures and data representation;
Mastering the Operations 2. Master the basic operations of mathematics: addition subtraction, multiplication, division;
Mastering the Skills Master the skills of combined operations;
The Broader Mathematical Skills Master basic mathematical skills: making estimates and approximates, measuring, handling data representing information in the form of graphs and charts;
Mathematics in Daily Life Use mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems in everyday life effectively and responsibly;
The Language of Mathematics Use the language of mathematics correctly;
Technology & Mathematics Use suitable technology in concept building, acquiring mathematical skills and solving problems;
Intelligent Applications Apply the knowledge of mathematics systematically, heuristically, accurately and carefully;
Meaningful Participation Participate in activities related to mathematics; and
Different Faces of Mathematics Appreciate the importance and beauty of mathematics.
MAIN EMPHASIS IN T&L Problem solving Communication in mathematics Mathematical reasoning Mathematical connections Application of technology
TEACHING & LEARNING Teachers should create an environment that is enjoyable, meaningful, useful and challenging for teaching and learning. The teaching and learning processes emphasise concept building, skill acquisition as well as the inculcation of positive values.
T&L APPROACHES Pupil-centred learning Multiple intelligences Learning styles Teaching aids / resources Formative evaluation Cooperative learning Contextual learning Mastery learning Constructivism Enquiry-discovery Futures study
ASSESSMENT Different methods of assessment can be conducted using multiple assessment techniques [written and oral work, demonstrations]. Pupils can be assessed through interviews, open-ended questions, observations and assignments.
DISCUSSION What are the main challenges teachers face in trying to realise the philosophy, aims and objectives of the KBSR mathematics curriculum?
