Presentation transcript:

Shoals Marine Laboratory derives its fresh water from two sources: Well. The well is a 20 foot dug well supplied by groundwater under the influence of surface water (GWUDI). Reverse osmosis unit. The reverse osmosis unit is used only when the water in the well drops to a low level.

Water from both sources is pumped into an underground cistern where it is chlorinated. From the cistern water is pumped to a storage tank where it is distributed through a flow meter and into a manifold in Kiggins Commons.

Target chlorine level in the cistern = 1 mg/L Target chlorine level halfway between cistern and distribution manifold = 0.2 mg/L

Again, the water demand for the island is as follows:

Yearly average of freshwater consumption for Appledore Average (gpm) Average per capita (gpm) 2001 1.19 2002 1.13 0.014 2004 1.06 2005 0.015 2006 1.27 0.012
