La Fiesta de San Fermin

Where it’s celebrated La fiesta de San Fermin is celebrated in the city of Pamplona (Navarre, Spain). It starts on July 6th and ends on July 14th.

Who celebrates it Visitors from all around the world come to Spain to celebrate la fiesta de San Fermin.

The purpose of the celebration The purpose of la fiesta de San Fermin is to honor Saint Fermin, a Pamplona bishop who travelled converting people to Christianity.

History of La Fiesta de San Fermin La fiesta de San Fermin originated when three festivals were combined into one. These festivals were the San Fermin festival, the town fair of Pamplona, and a celebration of bullfighting.

Traditions When the festival ends at midnight on July 14th, everyone sings the sad farewell song called “pobre de mi” to express their longing for the next year to come.

Is it comparable? There aren’t any holidays we celebrate here that are similar to la fiesta de San Fermin.

Vocab Encierro- running of the bulls Perseguir- to pursue, chase Manada- crowd, herd Arremeter- to attack, charge Estampida- stampede Coraje- courage, nerve, anger Heridos- injured people Bestia- a beast, ignorant, rude

Vocab Lanzar- to throw Asustarse- to be scared Amanecer- break of dawn Plaza de Toros- bullring Matador- bullfighter Tedio- tedious Derroche- to waste, throw

Running With the Bulls Thousands of people, mainly men, run the streets of Spain with the bulls. Some of the roads are blocked off so that the bulls eventually end up in the bullring. Two dozen bulls enter the bullring charging through about two thousand men, flinging them to the side occasionally.

Religious Origins La fiesta de San Fermin isn’t just the running of the bulls. It has religious origins too. Events such as the procession take place on the morning of July 7th. This religious celebration complements the iconic bull- a totem- and Baco, the god of wine.

Other Information La fiesta de San Fermin started in 1951. Everyone wears red and white during the days of la fiesta de San Fermin. The running of the bulls is the most popular and well known part of la fiesta de San Fermin.
