Building Resilience: From Early Childhood to Young Adults! Deborah Gilboa, MD

Why are we here?

The ability to RECOVER from ADVERSITY! What IS Resilience? The ability to RECOVER from ADVERSITY! What do we know? Bad things happen. There are always choices to be made. Feelings change over time. Recovery requires tools and experience. What do they need? PRACTICE.

Finding Resilience Building resilience requires trust. What doesn’t work? “Stop crying!” “Calm down.” “Just relax!” Why not? Can I tell you how to feel? Strong emotion is a sign of fight or flight. What does work? Communication and repetition.

Take One Step “Getting involved will make us both feel better!” The Myth: “Getting involved will make us both feel better!” The Truth: Stepping back helps kids

GUILT. Why do adults step in? Love Fear Empathy Helpfulness Greater resources Experience Habit Genuine enjoyment Fear Responsibility Overwhelming Deteriorating Future consequences Risking the relationship GUILT.

What would be better? Home skills Relationship skills Problem-solving! Doing = learning. Doing builds resilience! Home skills Relationship skills Problem-solving! Look for chances to take one step back.

Home Skills Clothing Food Homework Cleaning Transportation Appointments Budgeting/Buying

Relationship Skills Siblings Friendships Strangers Teachers/Coaches Bosses Romantic relationships

Problem-Solving Let life teach the lesson! Praise the process. Play “What if?” Read a book or watch a show. What would you tell a friend? “I’ll be really interested to see what you do!”

Resilience If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only take one thing… It must be taught Whenever you can, take one step back.
