Anglia Ruskin REF Awayday 2017 Towards REF 2021 Anglia Ruskin REF Awayday 2017
Reflections and introduction to the breakout groups Research Environment Reflections and introduction to the breakout groups Dr Tim Brooks, Head of Research Excellence & Enhancement, RIDO REF Awayday, 29 November 2017
What’s staying the same (ish) Weighting of environment at 15% REF 2014 environment templates as the ‘starting point’: Overview Research Strategy People Income, infrastructure and facilities Collaboration and contribution to the discipline ‘Appropriate indicators’ to back up narrative content.
What we know is new (ish) More structured template with specific sections on unit support for Collaboration beyond HE Interdisciplinary research Impact Role of Category C staff Open Research More quantitative data Provision of institutional-level information within UoA template
What we think might feature Unit circumstances Distribution of outputs Use of ORCID
What we know we don’t know Definition of ‘research degrees’ Assessment period for the narrative element Formatting requirements Likely page limit
Good practice from REF 2014 (1) Significant growth in research income as a result of a strategic intention to do so. Investing in state of the art technologies to address specific infrastructural challenges Ensuring appropriate support to address the unit’s cparticular staff profile Leading and supporting shared research facilities in a consortium with other institutions
Good practice from REF 2014 (2) Developing new organisational structures to invest in new areas of activity Interdisciplinary research studentships; appointing staff with other disciplinary backgrounds to enable the introduction of interdisciplinary perspectives Detailing the research activity of research students in the unit – grants, conferences, publications.
Identifying comparators UoA Convenor nominations Overall / Environment GPA better than ours Environment GPA better than Outputs GPA
Breakout discussions Are there any features that explain the comparator unit’s performance? What good practice can you identify? What research themes emerge and how does your unit support them? What challenges can you identify, and what can we do about them?
Thank you Any questions? Dr. Tim Brooks, Head of Research Excellence & Enhancement, RIDO tim.brooks@anglia.ac.uk
