Crash Course Government- Political Systems (Start at 6:50 and end at 7:27)

What are the types of minor parties in the United States? Ideological parties- follow a certain set of beliefs, longest lasting minor party (socialists) Single-issue parties- concentrate on a single public policy matter (Right to Life Party) Economic protest parties- protest in times of economic hardship, usually have solution or blame (Greenback Party) Splinter parties- split away from one of the major parties, formed around some strong personality (Bull Moose Party)

What roles do minor parties play in American politics? Critic- bring issues to the forefront of the country by pointing them out first (abortion) Innovator- first to do something (national convention) Spoiler- can’t win, but can decide, the presidential election (Perot 1992)

Will we always be a two-party system? Reasons to believe our two-party system is weakening include: Growing number of independents Increase in split-ticket voting Growth of single-issue organizations Intra-party disagreements Less reliance on party for campaigning
