                                          Learning Objectives To something something

The Bear that Wasn’t Why didn't the Factory officials recognize the Bear for what he was? Why did it become harder and harder for him to maintain his identity? Whose opinions and beliefs have the greatest effect on how you think about your own identity? How does our need to be part of a group affect our actions? Why is it so difficult for a person to go against the group?

Orientation Day Identify words or phrases Jennifer Wang uses to describe her identity Identify words or phrases that she uses to describe her attitude toward her identity. Explain what Wang means when she says “the ‘Jennifer’ clashing with the ‘Wang’, the Wang fighting with the ‘Jennifer’”? What examples does she provide to support this description of her name?

’Tis but thy name that is my enemy: Thou art thyself, though not a Montague, What’s Montague? It is not hand nor foot, Nor arm nor face. O be some other name belonging to a man! What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other word would smell as sweet. William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

Discuss the meaning of the quotation below: “It is through our names that we first place ourselves in the world. Our names, being the gift of others, must be made our own.”

My Name What does Esperanza's name mean literally in English and Spanish? What is the denotation of her name?  What connotations does she associate with her name? Why does her name mean sadness or waiting?  What images does Cisneros use to make the connotations clear? Why are they effective?  What personal details does the passage include? What cultural information is included?

My Name How does the narrator establish a conflict between her Mexican identity and the English-speaking country through the discussion of her name? Esperanza is named after her grandmother. In what ways does she admire her grandmother? What parts of her grandmother’s life and personality does Esperanza want to avoid? What does having “a place by the window” mean?

My Name Esperanza says she wants to baptize herself with a new name. Why is this more powerful than simply saying she wants to change her name? What other words or ideas do we associate with baptism? Why do you think Esperanza wants to change her name to Zeze the X?
