PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

EMPHASIS Used to create dominance and focus Artists can emphasize color, value, shape, etc. to achieve dominance. Various kinds of contrast can emphasize a center of interest.

MOVEMENT Directs viewers along lines, edges, shapes, and colors Moves the eye easily on paths of equal value Visual movement usually to a focal area.

RHYTHM Repetition of visual movement: colors, shapes, or lines Variety is essential to keep the rhythm exciting and active. Movement and Rhythm work together to create the visual equivalent of a musical beat.

CONTRAST Refers to differences in values, colors, textures, shapes, etc. Adds visual excitement and interest If all the art elements are the same, it is monotonous.

BALANCE Refers to the distribution of visual “weight” It is the visual equilibrium of the elements of design.

PATTERN Planned or random repetition Similar repeated motifs lead to pattern. Increases visual excitement

UNITY Unity is one of the most important aspects of well-designed art. Unity makes the art work feel complete and finished.
