Selecting, Adding & Deleting Slides To add a slide, click the “New Slide” button on the Home Tab ribbon. To work on a slide, go to the “Slides/Outline” pane (left side of screen) and click on it. To delete a slide, go to “Slides/Outline” pane, click on the slide and press “Backspace” or “Delete” button. Students’ second slide will be empty except for a text box that says “RESIZE ME.” They should practice resizing the text box, then they should delete that slide and add a new slide. Start the 2nd slide with this slide content.
Slide Layouts You can click on the Layout button (next to New Slide) to change to another type of slide layout. Layout gives different choices for chart, table and picture arrangements. Have student try different layouts
Adding Clip Art Click on Insert Tab and select Clip Art. In the Clip Art pane, type a search word, and click the Go button. Select your choice. Click on it to insert-it into your slide. Resize the image by dragging the “sizing handles” Have them choose a layout w/room or move text box. Then add Clip Art, move the pic, and adjust the size. Emphasize the multimedia aspects of PPT and the importance of avoiding text-heavy presentations.
Adding a Text Box Click on Insert Tab and select Text Box. Place the insertion pointer (an upside down sword) where you want the text to go. Click and drag open a text box. Enter your text. Resize the text box by dragging the “sizing handles”. Have them choose a layout w/room or move text box. Then add Clip Art, move the pic, and adjust the size. Emphasize the multimedia aspects of PPT and the importance of avoiding text-heavy presentations.
Adding Pictures From a File If you want to add a saved image from the computer or digital camera, go to Insert Tab, click on Picture. In pop-up window, find the image on your computer. Double-click on it to add it. Adjust size as needed. Have them choose a layout w/room or move text box. Then add Picture, move the pic, and adjust the size. If desired the instructor oculd also cover copying and pasting images from the Internet.
Adding a Theme To choose a pre-made background, go to the Design Tab, choose a Theme. Colors in the Theme can also be adjusted by clicking on the Colors tool. You can also adjust the background color by clicking on Background style. Affects all slides. Have students apply a theme to the slides, and experiment with colors and backgrounds. Emphasize that a properly designed PPT should look unified, i.e. the slides should be the same stylistically.
Slide Transitions Affect the way slides appear on the screen. Go to Transitions Tab, find the Transition to This Slide group, and click on a slide icon to preview it. After choosing, click on “Apply to all slides”. Timed slide advance option on the far right under “Advance Slide.” Students should apply an animation style to all slides.
Slide Animations Affect the way text appears on the screen. Go to Animations Tab, find the Animation group, and click on a animation icon to preview it. Note: For an animation to work, you must first select an object to animate. Students should apply an animation style to all slides.
Saving and Printing To save, go to File Tab & select Save As. Remember: Save as a 97-2003 compatible document. To print, go to File Tab & select Print. Under “Settings” choose “Full Page Slides” and choose the appropriate printing format. Have them save their file on the computer…explain the fact that Office 2003 is unable to open Office 2007 docs unless they are saved in a compatible version.
Presenting a Slide Show To start a PowerPoint show, press F5. To start from a certain slide, click on slide, go to Slide Show Tab, and choose “From Current Slide.” To advance a slide, press Enter on the keyboard or click the mouse. To go back a slide, press Backspace. To end the show press Escape. Remember: Keep presentations simple. This is the point where instructors should emphasize the design tips that are in the PPT design and copyright handout.
