We will learn about listening comprehension Practice listening What are We Doing today We will learn about listening comprehension Practice listening Thinking critically about what we read

Principles for good Listening Basics: Pay attention Focus on the speaker Pay attention to body language and facial expressions Facial expression and body language communicate as much as verbal language

Principles for good listening Practice Active Listening Ask the speaker to slow down or repeat when you don’t understand or just want to be certain about what you heard. Repeating back what you think you heard the speaker said “So what I’m hearing is that ………”

Principles for good listening Pay Attention to Structure Usually in formal lecture or speech, speaker will usually let you know ahead of time the organization of the discourse. I.e “ Today we will discuss the two types of diabetes…” In less formal conversation a person can say: “Okay, there are a few issues I need to raise with you…..”

Listen For Key Words What words does the speaker emphasize Pay attention to words that are stressed. They usually signify main points “Let’s talk about the TIME we will meet tomorrow….” The stress word time signals the time of tomorrow’s appointment is important and the main point.

Principles for listening Key Phrases or Markers Formal Lectures: Speaker uses key phrases and “marks” to emphasis main point “The main point is….” “On the other hand, some people take an opposing viewpoint….” In everyday conversation the speaker uses less formal markers. “I guess what I’m trying to say is….” “Let’s see…..” “Last time I checked” “On the other hand”

Let’s Practice!! Have you heard of Bob Marley? Let’s listen to a song
