Let’s Make an Advertisement!

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 We need to make some advertisements for our businesses.  But before we do, let's learn a bit about how companies sell things with ads.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Companies can be tricky in how they sell things and it's good to know how to tell the tricks.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 $600 billion After all, companies care a lot about what kids think.  Did you know that American children under 12 years-old influence over of parent spending per year!

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 For that reason, companies spend a lot of time trying to get kids to know their products.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 When you see an ad on TV or in a magazine, it’s good to be on the lookout for tricks! You don't want to just buy something because a company tells you to buy it.

So let's take a look at some tricky ads! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 So let's take a look at some tricky ads!

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Like look at this ad for Fruit Roll Ups.  Doesn't it look like the roll-ups were made with lots of fruit?  There is fruit all over the box!

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 But actually the roll-ups are not made with fruit at all, just some pear concentrate.  If you look on the ingredients on the back, you can tell.  They are made mostly with sugar and chemicals.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Of course, there are laws against companies telling direct lies.  Like the company couldn't say there are 8 roll-ups in the box, if there are only 4.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 But in this case, because of the pear concentrate they can pretend that it is made from "real fruit" and get away with it.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Here's another example... If you look at this box, you would think that this toy comes with the missile and the GI Joe action figure.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 But it really doesn't.  It's just the launcher.   The box never SAID those other things were in there, but it would be easy to think so. In fact, the launcher doesn't even launch.  It says so on the back of the box in small print.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 It's important to look carefully at ads when you see them.  Don't always believe what the company is telling you.  After all, they want you to spend your money! :)

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Now there are many different types of advertisements that businesses use to attract customers.  Let's take a look at a few of them:

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Endorsements Sometimes companies use what are called celebrity endorsements.  That means that a famous person says that they like a certain product.  For instance, here the famous baseball player Derek Jeter implying that he uses Gillette deodorant.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 The company hopes that if you like Derek Jeter that you will also like their deodorant.  Of course, it doesn't really make that much sense.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 After all, Derek Jeter is a great baseball player, but what does he know about deodorant?  Still, it has been shown that these type of ads make people want to buy things.  Here's another…

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Comparison Another type of ad is the comparison ad.   Sometimes a company will show their product and another product and show how much better their product is.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Like here the DiGiorno Pizza Company shows that their pizza is cheaper than having a pizza delivered.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Sometimes ads compare their product versus not having something at all.  For instance, in this ad, the Palm Pilot company shows how much more ordered your life is if you have their product.  If you don't, they joke, you'll have to write everything on your hand.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Special Deal Another type of ad offers discounts or special deals.  For instance, this ad for carpet cleaning offers a coupon for having a room cleaned for just $20.

Some ads try to get the attention of the customer by being funny. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Funny Some ads try to get the attention of the customer by being funny. Sometimes they don’t even tell why their product is good They just figure if you laugh at the commercial… You will buy the product later

Here are some funny ads: Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Here are some funny ads:

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Beautify! Other ads try to show you that what they are selling will make you happier.  They might show you beautiful pictures of it and make you want to buy it.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 For instance, most food companies hire special "food make-up artists" whose job it is to make their food look especially good.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 In this ad, Century 21 tries to show with beautiful pictures all the great things you'll find if you move to Charlotte, North Carolina. They show pictures of golfing, boating, sunsets and so on.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Testimonial Finally there are the testimonial ads.  This is when a real person tells you how great the product is.  The company figures if you hear someone say how good a product is, that you will also want to buy it. Like this one...

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 Today you will make an ad for your business. It will be a “print ad” on paper. It should have lots of color and be your best work. You will be showing it to the “Sharks” later on.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 When you make your ad you have to make one of the types we talked about.

Copyright Right Brain Curriculum 2016 It can be… Funny Comparison Endorsement Special Deal Testimonial Beautify
