Inference vs. Observation Practice Quiz

What is an observation?

Answer: Something you can observe or notice using your five senses.

What is an Inference?

Answer: a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. Taking a observation and using previous knowledge in order to make an educated guess as to what that object is. In other words, it is a good guess based on prior knowledge.

How are the Different?

Jon and Sally are having a conversation, are the following statements inferences or observations? Sally: I love looking at the blue sky it is so beautiful. Jon: I love looking at these plants, they have weird pointy projections, and nice looking red parts. Sally: It is also really tall. I think they are rose bushes.

Answer: Statement 1: Inference Statement 2: Observation

You see Charlie the Charger walk across the softball field You see Charlie the Charger walk across the softball field. Choose whether the statement is an inference about Charlie or an observation of Charlie.  Charlie is really good at softball!!!!         Charlie has 4 body parts hanging down and touch the ground!!!!!         Charlie's outfit is dark!!!        Charlie is happy Corner Canyon scored!!!

Answer: Statement 1: Inference Statement 2: Observation

Pick an object that you can see from where your sitting Pick an object that you can see from where your sitting. Make 5 observations and 5 inferences about that object.
