Plasma Clearance

Plasma Clearance Is the volume of plasma that is completely cleared of the substance by the kidneys per unit time.

Clearance rate of a substance (ml/min) = U x V P Urine conc. of the substance x Urine flow rate (ml/min) __________________________________________________ Plasma concentration of the substance per ml of plasma

= U x V P 5.85mg/ml x 1ml/min 0.01mg/ml = 585 ml/min Extraction ratio for PAH is 90% 585ml/min/0.9 = 650ml/min Total blood flow through kidneys= 650/(1- 0.45)= 1185 ml/min
