North Africa and Southwest Asia are homes to the largest river and largest desert in the world. The climate in this region is very arid, or dry, and has very high daytime temperatures. Throughout history, three rivers have been crucial to life in this region, the Nile, Euphrates, and Tigris Rivers.

The Sahara is a vast desert that stretches across Africa, but it used to be a tropical grassland. The Sahara has gone through a gradual process of desertification, loss of fertile land.

The Euphrates and Tigris Rivers create a fertile stretch of land which is known as the fertile crescent. In the past, farmers have relied on flood from the rivers to water crops; however, recently farmers have used irrigation methods to redirect water without needing floods.
