The Theory* of Evolution *A scientific theory is a solid explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly tested and confirmed.

Life on Earth, as well as the shape of the Earth’s surface, has a history of change that is called evolution.

Biological evolutions accounts for the diversity of species developed through gradual processes over many generations. Species get many of their unique characteristics through biological adaptation. Biological adaptations include changes in structure, behaviors, or physiology (organ and cell systems) that enhance survival and reproductive success in a particular environment. Similarities between different organisms can show how they are related.

Fossils can be compared to one another and to living organisms according to their similarities and differences Thousands of layers of sedimentary rock provide evidence for the long history of the earth and it’s changing life forms. The fossil record is the collection of fossils and their placement in chronological order in the sedimentary rock.

Most species that have lived on the earth are now extinct. Extinction of species is common Extinction of species occurs when the environment changes and the individual organisms of that species do not have the traits necessary to survive and reproduce in the new, changed environment. The mastodon went extinct due to a rapid climate change

Theory of Evolution Species change over time Living things evolve in response to changes in their environment. Charles Darwin is considered the “Father of Evolution”. His theory of evolution is the widely held idea that all life is related and has come from one common ancestor. Changes that are beneficial to the organism are preserved because they help with survival. This is called natural selection. These changes, or mutations, are then passed on to the next generation.

Charles Darwin Charles Darwin was able to come up with this theory during his time as a naturalist on a ship, the HMS Beagle He wrote about his findings in his book, “The Origin of Species” Finch beak matching

What else supports the Theory of Evolution? Plate Tectonics Theory: The movement of Earth’s continental and oceanic plates have caused mountains and deep ocean trenches to form and continually change the shape of Earth’s crust throughout time. The movements of the plates cause changes in climate, geographic features (like mountains), and in the types of living things that live in certain areas. Law of Superposition: Thousands of layers of sedimentary rock provide evidence for the long history of the earth and for the long history of changing life forms. These life forms leave fossils in rocks, and more recently deposited rock layers are more likely to contain fossils resembling species that exist today.
