Mapping

What is a Map? A map is like a picture of the earth, taken from above. It shows features of the land or water on the surface of the earth .

Mapping Activity We all have a mental map of the world….a virtual atlas One goal of this course is to improve and expand the contents of your mental map

Mental Map Sketch a map of the world without using any resources! Label important features (continents, regions, countries, cities, bodies of water)

Cartography Cartography is the art of drawing accurate, easily readable, attractive maps

Labelling As NEAT as possible Should be copied in pencil first, then copied in ink Should be spelled correctly Printed parallel to the base of the map River names should curve to follow the course of the river A DOT (.) should be used when labelling cities, placing the name of the city as close as possible

Labels Continued Labels for similar features (capital cities) should be the same size Labels should not block other information on the map Do not underline labels

Colouring/Shading Maps should be colour coded; using different colours to show the different areas on the map Use solid colours only White and black are not used as colours on the map Grey should only be used for areas not important to the map

Colour/Shading Continued Blue is only used for water (lakes, rivers, oceans, seas, bays) Ensure the colours used in the map match the colours in the legend

Mapping Checklist Title Legend Scale Direction Border Date of Publication
