How slaves gained freedom 1. Slaves saved money to buy their freedom. 2. Some owners released their slaves from bondage until states passed laws making emancipation much harder. 3. Thousands of slaves were released after the War of 1812. 4. The population increased naturally as free blacks got married and had children.
Free African Americans were also barred from working certain jobs. Laws in every southern state required that free blacks work. Free blacks had to show proof of employment or they could be sentenced to forced labor.
Black Slave Owners Some free African Americans used their wealth to purchase slaves. William Ellison gained wealth a bought a plantation with as many as 60 slaves. Most black slave owners purchased family members as slaves so that they could stay together.
Blacks in the North They could serve on juries and had more careers open to them. Still, few white people considered black people their equals.
Westward Expansion Among the people who explored the newly gained land during the Louisiana Purchase was a slave named York. York was a great hunter, swimmer, and fisher. He also worked with Sacagawea to interpret for the rest of the party. Upon return, York asked Clark for his freedom which was granted after a 10 year wait.
