Questions You May Have as You Begin This Next Journey in Life Who am I? Where am I going? What do I value? What am I feeling? Will I be enough? Who is my help? What if I am not what you think? What if I fail? Normalize the idea that change is part of life and this is the first of many life’s journeys. Lesson Extension: Identity formation and autonomy Erikson   Throughout each person's lifetime, they experience different crises or conflicts. Each of the conflicts arises at a certain point in life and must be successfully resolved for progression to the next of the eight stages. The particular stage relevant to identity formation, according to Erikson, takes place during adolescence, called "Identity versus Role Confusion."[3] The "Identity versus Role Confusion" stage consists of adolescents trying to figure out who they are in order to form a basic identity that they will build on throughout their life, especially concerning social and occupational identities. They face the complexities of determining one's own identity. Erikson said this crisis is resolved with identity achievement, the point at which an individual has extensively considered various goals and values, accepting some and rejecting others, and understands who they are as a unique person.[4] Image Source: http://writm.com/shruti-2/who-am-i-3/ 3

Developmental Tasks of Older Teens Identity – development of self Autonomy – age appropriate Tug of War – leaving home, “ treat me like an adult . . . can I have some money?” Need parental supervision and support Conflict helps us leave – helps us transition to change

So Now You’re Stressed Out Play video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ24SZI43SE and discuss the stress they are feeling as they transition out of high school. How can you relate to the stress Riley is feeling as her life drastically changes? How is your life about to drastically change? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ24SZI43SE

Signs You Are Not Coping Well Not sleeping well or sleeping all the time Unusually irritable Significant change in appetite Withdrawn Secretive Major change in normal likes/dislikes Hopeless Shut down Seek support. Brainstorm High School Resources and then post-graduation resources

What If You Fail …. Winston Churchill was the British Prime Minister during most of the World War II period though 1955 and is arguably one of the most influential leaders of the last century. He was well known for his perseverance. . 7

JK Rowling on the Benefits of Failure Failure Teaches Lessons Failure Helps Us Overcome Fear Failure Recommits us to Our Goals Failure Inspires Creative Solutions Failure Strengthens Our Support System In fact, there are many benefits to failure … LESSONS: Failure teaches us, sometimes harshly, life lessons. When we learn what not to do, we learn how to do it correctly, or at least better, next time. FEAR: We're often afraid of failing. However, when we fail something we dread, we actually can have less fear because now we are familiar with it. This can actually make it easier to face other obstacles that we may fear. GOALS: When we have set-backs or fail in our efforts to achieve our goals, this often causes us to reevaluate and prioritize our goals. Creative Solutions: Failure provides us with opportunities to think outside of the box and look at the goal or problem from another, and often more productive prospective. Support System: When we fail, we find out will be there to support us, and we also find out more about our internal support system. Show JK Rowling on the Benefits of Failure. Have a discussion about takeaways.
