Soft Sculpture Art 2 + Advanced Studio

Folk Art Folk art is known as primitive which means the artist does not have an education in fine arts but it’s more of a craft or utilitarian way of creating something. Usually folk art has a purpose and is not just for decoration Contemporary folk art Many folk art traditions like quilting, ornamental picture framing, and wood carving continue to thrive while new forms constantly emerge. Contemporary folk artists are frequently self-taught as their work is often developed in isolation or in small communities across the country. Folk art is supposed to look handmade. It has a rustic, primitive quality to it that is appreciated by the viewer. There is no “perfection” in folk art but the ability to understand and love the imperfect.

Animal Choose an animal that interests you Has cool details Has patterns or designs on it Sea or land Think outside the box. A cat or dog (or monkey!) is not thinking outside the box. Think of an exotic animal…something no one else will think of.

Your animal You are to make 1 animal. It should feel animated and should be given character through use of fabric, sewing techniques, embellishments, etc. Give it “life”

Staying away from cliché When we talk about cliché’s in art, we talk about something that is over used or becomes a stereotype. When you start brainstorming, take the time to write down or sketch a few ideas then rework those ideas to make them unique/different/personalized. If you have an idea that you think may be too over used, think about how you can morph that idea so it becomes it’s own new thing.

Emotion Your sculpture should be created with the idea that it will give the viewer some kind of emotion: Happy Sad Funny Uncomfortable Nostalgic Confused Creepy Weird Angry Frustrated Depressed

Size Requirements When creating something 3D, you need to think about size because this creature needs to be able to stand/sit on it’s own. PROPORTIONS are so important The dimensions should be between 7”x 7” to 12”x 12” If you find yourself done early, you can create an environment for your animal using fabric, construction paper, cardboard, etc. for extra credit

Materials/Tools Fabric Pillow stuffing Cotton sewing thread White Black Embellishments Buttons Beads Sequins Others you can bring from home

Seam ripper Thimble
