Metrics Should we all use them?

Warm Up Question Please write the following question in your IB Physics notebook: What do you remember about the metric system and conversions? Please write your answer using a different color

Metrics: Should we ALL use them? Task: read/discuss (online) articles related to the Metric System and its uses/implementation. Be prepared for a discussion tomorrow (essentially a mini-Socratic Seminar) to try to come to a consensus on the following question: Should the US move towards being a fully Metric country in the near future?

Should the US move towards being a fully Metric country in the near future? You will be reading several articles (they’re all fairly short) in ActivelyLearn (www.activelylearn.com). If you do not yet have an account, it’s free, and you can just register for it before you begin. When you are registered and logged in, you’ll be asked to “join a class”. Use the following class code to do so: Class Code: vtldm

Should the US move towards being a fully Metric country in the near future? There are 7 articles related to the question about whether the US should “go metric”. I’m asking you to read and respond to questions/take notes for at least 4 of them. Be sure to read articles that offer evidence for BOTH sides of the question so that you are best prepared for the discussion.

Should the US move towards being a fully Metric country in the near future? Within some of the articles there are a few questions to answer as you read. These questions will not be graded based on how you respond, but rather for how prepared you are entering the discussion. If there are no questions given for you to answer, it is expected that you will be taking notes within the article. It will be up to you if you want to make your notes “private” so that only you and I can read them, or if you want to make them public so others in the class can see them. If you have a question that is raised, or just a great thought about what you read, this is a good way to make others think about your idea, too.

Should the US move towards being a fully Metric country in the near future? Homework for tomorrow: remember what you read; print off notes and answers that you had for each article; be prepared to discuss the question in your groups that you are assigned to tomorrow. Within your assigned group you will be holding respectful discourse to try to come to a consensus on the answer to the question posted above. You will then be creating a “flyer” (but on a poster) persuading others to your side/answer. More details on that part tomorrow. 😊
