Personality It consist of behaviors, attitudes, feelings, and ways of thinking that make you an individual. Many researchers use five central traits to describe how people behave, relate to others, and react to change.

Five central traits Extroversion- how much you like being with other people. Agreeableness- describes your tendency to relate to other people in a friendly way. Conscientiousness- describes how responsible and self-disciplined you are. Emotional Stability- people who tend to be relaxed, secure, and calm during situations. Openness to Experiences- tend to be curious, imaginative, and creative.

Question How would you describe your personality, using the five central traits?

How Personality Forms It is formed through traits that are influenced by a combination of heredity & environment. In what ways has your friends influenced your personality?

Stages of Personality Development Develop trust Learn to be Independent Take Initiative Develop skills Search for identity Establish Intimacy Create & Nurture Look back with Accpetance

Self-esteem Survey done by teens…. Question: What would make teens feel better? 49% better grades 38% losing weight 36% getting in shape 30% better relationship with parents 16% fitting in 15% I like the way I am

High Self esteem + Low Self esteem - Accept themselves for who they are. They know strengths & weaknesses. Form close relationships with people who respect and value them. Bounce back quickly from setbacks Don’t have respect for themselves Judge themselves based on others “put on act” in public to hide insecurities They fear of failure & looking bad

Ways to boost your Self esteem Maintain positive attitude Focus on strengths Form close relationships Set goals for yourself Avoid risky behaviors Ask for help Help others

How it develops On average, Self-esteem drops in early adolescence, increases during adulthood, and decreases again toward the end of life.

Improving your Self-esteem Don’t’ base esteem solely on others opinion. Set ambitions, but realistic goals for yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself Look beyond your own concerns Don’t focus on the appearance….Don’t judge a book by its cover
