Warm-Up Fill in each statement with <, > or =. 1. 5 ___ 8 1. 5 ___ 8 2. 0.6 ___ 0.09 3. 1.2 ___ 1.20 7.4 ___ 7.14 0.001 ___ 0.0001 < > = > >

Inequalities Target: Write inequalities for real-world situations. Lesson 1-F Inequalities Target: Write inequalities for real-world situations. Graph inequalities on a number line.

Jennifer has less than $75 Vocabulary Inequality A mathematical sentence that contains < , >,  or . Jennifer has less than $75 in her bank account. j < $75 Monte has at least 300 baseball cards. m  300

Inequality Symbols > “greater than” < “less than”  “greater than or equal to”  “less than or equal to”

Example 1 Write an inequality for each statement. a. Nanette’s height (h) is greater than 50 inches. The key words are “greater than”. Use the symbol >. h > 50 b. Pete has at least $6 in his pocket. Let p represent the amount of money. The key words are “at least”. This means the lowest p ≥ 6 amount he could have is $6. Use the ≥ symbol. c. Jeremy is less than 20 years old. Let j represent Jeremy’s age. The key words are “less than”. Use the symbol <. j < 20

Inequalities and Number Lines For < or >, use an OPEN circle to graph the inequality: x > 1 x < 1 For  or , use a CLOSED circle to graph the x  1 x  1 x could be any value greater than –1. 1 2 3 4 5 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 Notice that the open circles on the number line DO NOT include that value while filled-in circles DO include the value. 1 2 3 4 5 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1

Example 2 Graph each inequality on a number line. a. x < 5 b. y ≥ 0 a. This inequality includes all values less than 5 (not including 5). Use an open circle on 5 to show this. The arrow points to all values less than 5. This inequality includes all values greater than or equal to 0. Use a closed circle on 0 to show this. The arrow points to all values greater than 0.

Exit Problems 1. Write an inequality for the graph. 2. Write an inequality for the statement: Jeena’s height (h) is less than 5 feet. 3. Graph the inequality x < 2.

Communication Prompt Number lines are used to give a visual picture of an inequality statement. What is another situation in math where a visual is used to show the math?
