Background 2011 Careers Guidance Services were decommissioned – Mr Gove thought they were ineffective – saved £224 Million in budget cuts. What was the missing link?!! Sir John Holman in 2014 undertook research funded by the Gatsby Foundation by David Sainsbury. The Gatsby Benchmarks Benchmarks 1. A stable careers programme   1. A stable careers programme Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by students, parents, teachers, governors and employers. 2. Learning from career and labour market information Every student and their parents should have access to good quality information about a future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make best use of available information. 3.Addressing the needs of each student Addressing the needs of each student. Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each student. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout. 4. Linking curriculum learning to careers All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

Encounters with employers and employees Every student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes. 6. Experience of workplaces Every student should have first –hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities and expand their networks. 7. Encounters with further and higher education All students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace. 8. Personal Guidance Every student should have opportunities for a guidance interview with a career adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made.

Next Step Enterprise Adviser Network Government introduced the Careers Enterprise Company (CEC) in 2015. The main role of the CEC is to increase the number of encounters young people have with employers to support Gatsby Benchmarks 5 and 6. i.e. increasing the number of engagements/interventions young people have with employers. Number of routes they have achieved this, but primarily… Enterprise Adviser Network Government has published the Statutory Guidance for education… Education must provide young people with at least 7 encounters with employers, one for each year of education.

Enterprise Adviser Network Network was developed across pilot areas in 2015 by the Careers Enterprise Company (CEC) – Government funded private organisation. What is the Enterprise Adviser Network? Network is made up of volunteer Senior Leaders from Business who will work with Senior Leadership Careers Leaders in education. Give up a day a month to support the programme Influence the curriculum to identify gaps in delivery Offer relevant support Benefits to companies to get involved: Inspire young people to consider a career in a sector where there is a skills shortage. Young people see the relevance of study and career Identify young people who could be in the future workforce

Supported by your Enterprise Co-ordinator who is there: Recruit Enterprise Advisers and Industry Champions Identify and match with an education establishment Provide you with the information and support you need to engage with the programme. Offer Training days where EAs come together to share information and good practice. Work as a conduit between you and the school/college.

Political Essex Enterprise Adviser Network Industry Champion Network Essex offers schools a slightly different service: Enterprise Adviser Network Industry Champion Network Currently we have 49 EAs of which:- 9 are from the Construction Sector. Industry Champion Network offers support for education on an ad-hoc basis. Called upon to go into education to help with Practice Interview days, presentations, activity days involving careers/STEM etc.
