Solomon Northup: 12 Years A Slave Free born African American from NY Abolitionist In 1841 he went to WA, DC (where slavery was still legal) to work as a musician He was captured and enslaved With help from other abolitionists, he was returned to NY after 12 years Laws were in place in NY to aid kidnapped free African-Americans In 1853, the first year he was free, he wrote 12 Years A Slave
