Nationally Coordinated Promotion Languages Promotional Materials Information for Students

Information for Students ‘I want to find out as much as I can about other people.’ Is that you? What do kids who can speak another language say about meeting people from another culture? ‘Meeting people with different perspectives on life – with different values – different traditions. It’s fantastic. You start to think about all sorts of things that you wouldn’t otherwise.’ ‘Getting a good look at other cultures, and you can only do this by speaking the language, at least a bit, you start to think about your own country and background and why they are like they are.’ ‘You don’t realise that even the most basic things can be different.’

Information for Students ‘I want to find out as much as I can about other people.’ Is that you? In every environment, speaking Languages gives you access to a whole new world. Music, the wide world of the internet, cultural history, people you would never otherwise have met, and so many other things suddenly become accessible. And this is what you want, isn’t it? More choices? It’s a quality of life thing. Access More Areas.

Information for Students ‘I want to get a job that will take me places.’ Is that you? Some people think that the only jobs available using Languages are in translation, interpreting or teaching. This isn’t true. In fact, Languages can be helpful in lots of different jobs, and some employers reward people with Languages skills with extra salary because they know they are useful in today’s international business world.

Information for Students ‘I want to get a job that will take me places.’ Is that you? It is becoming increasingly common to study Languages along with a professional qualification at tertiary level, like Engineering and German, or Health Sciences and Spanish, or Medicine and Chinese. Languages take you places. Some of the career areas where a second language can be a real plus are: Aid agency work Engineering Government and public administration (cont. next slide)

Information for Students ‘I want to get a job that will take me places.’ Is that you? Some more career areas where a second language can be a real plus are: Health Hospitality Marketing, finance and other business service areas Media and journalism Technology Travel and tourism

Information for Students ‘I want to travel and get as much out of it as I can.’ Is that you? Travel overseas is so much more interesting and valuable when you can speak the language of the country you are visiting. You will also learn more about the country so you will have a better idea of what there is to see and do and what’s going on.

Information for Students ‘I want to travel and get as much out of it as I can.’ Is that you? You’ll be able to talk to kids your own age and find out what they’re up to and where the cool places are to visit and talk about. Even something simple like having a meal will be easier when you understand the menu and when you can make choices about what you might like to eat. No need to go on. You get the picture. Access more areas.

Information for Students ‘Only clever kids can learn a second language.’ Is that what you think? WRONG! About half the world’s population speaks more than one language. In Australia alone nearly 1.5 million people speak a language other than English at home. It’s not beyond anyone to learn another language.

Information for Students ‘Only clever kids can learn a second language.’ Is that what you think? WRONG! You mightn’t sound like a native speaker even after a few years of language learning. But, as they say, a little language can make a lot of difference. If you’re looking for a job, there is room for all levels of ability. Although fluency will give you more options, basic ability in Languages is much in demand as employers seek people capable of communicating with foreign customers or breaking the ice with the right few phrases at visits or in a meeting.

Information for Students ‘Only clever kids can learn a second language.’ Is that what you think? WRONG! Becoming good at Languages will take a good deal of steady work, but isn’t that like most subjects? While you’re learning Languages you might find your English getting better as you learn more about language structure, words and their meanings, and the different ways in which people express themselves. Learning Languages also opens up a whole new world of literature and artistic expression which you might just get a buzz out of.

Information for Students ‘Learning a language is boring.’ Is that what you think? WRONG! There are all sorts of things that make learning Languages fun and rewarding, not least having a chance to try yourself out in real situations. One of the great things about Australia is that you don’t have to leave the country to have opportunities like that.

Information for Students ‘Learning a language is boring.’ Is that what you think? WRONG! How many people again was it that speak a language other than English when they are at home in Australia? Heaps. They could be just round the corner or up the street in the café where the guy shouts ‘buongiorno’ or ‘ciao’ when you arrive for your coffee and ‘arrivederci’ as you go out the door. You might like to see how you could fill in the middle of a conversation like that.

Information for Students Access All Areas! Learn a language. Really useful. Now!
