Periodic Trends
A periodic trend is a pattern that repeats itself on each row of the Periodic Table. There are lots of periodic trends, but we will focus on Valence Electrons State of Matter Metallic Character Atomic Radius Electronegativity
Valence Electrons: increase by one for each Representative Element 8 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
State of Matter Solids Gases
Metallic Character Metals - > Metalloids -> Nonmetals
Atomic Radius: atoms get smaller going from left to right And bigger going down
Electronegativity: the ability for an atom to attract electrons from a different atom in a chemical bond
Electronegativity: correlates with size Electronegativity: correlates with size. Small atoms have high electronegativity and large atoms have low electronegativity Noble Gases do not attract electrons (no EN) Highest EN Lowest EN
