Eduroam @ Norwegian airports NTW2013
Why eduroam at airports? Attempted 3 years ago – technical limitation «Demand» from parts of community Inspired by Sweden From UNINETT a general wish to expand the eduroam footprint Increase awareness and “market” the brand Airports seemed a good place to start – also since Avinor (Airport operator) showed interest. 19 airports have eduroam during the pilot, 1. July to 1. December. University in Tromsø contacted their local airport – and asked if UNINETT could investigate for all airports. Sweden reported positive feedback and generally more awareness. Current implementation Picture just showing 1 of 18 airports beside OSL. All eduroam clients auth requests gets proxied through Avinor Radius to a Radsecproxy at UNINETT and from there to our NTLS. Clients gets a RFC 1918 address and Internet access through local connection. Accounting collected by Avinor and also transferred to UNINETT. 2. desember 2018
Statistics Cost model Fixed Entry fee per airport Monthly rent for WLAN and WAN connection Variable costs Up to 25MB (avg pr user) pay per MB. No cost above. Total of around 9500 unique MAC addresses each of the 2 first months. So numbers quite stable. Of the 9500 unique users over 7000 used the service at Gardermoen. Numbers are higher than expected, our estimate was 6000 unique users each month – from the numbers we got from SUNET 2. desember 2018
What next? Conclude evalutation in December Could change implementation (point to multipoint into own network) Expect to enter agreement with few airports initially Working with alternative cost models Questions? More information contact tom.myren@uninett.no During pilot we need to suggest a way to distribute costs to institutions – very variable willingness to accept this. Also Avinor operate with quite a commercial price list, we try to argue that we should be treated as a special case. Airport have a free captive portal solution – so we really do not consume a lot of additional BW. 2. desember 2018
