Impressionism
What is it? Art movement of the late 19th century started in France Used strokes of bright colors and optical mixing Intended to reproduce effects of light Captured everyday subjects: people, landscapes, still life.
Why is it called that? An art critic originally used the term as an insult Based on the title of Monet’s painting, Impression, Sunrise (1872)
Impression, Sunrise
What made it different? It broke all the rules! Subjects: came from real life, not history Place: painted outdoors to capture light, not in a studio Technique: used bright colors applied with strong brushstrokes, not dark colors carefully applied to appear most realistic Optical blending Simplified forms
Who was involved? Claude Monet Camille Pissarro Berthe Morisot Alfred Sisley Edgar Degas Pierre-Auguste Renoir Paul Cezanne Later… Vincent van Gogh
Camille Pissarro Camille Pissarro: 'Haymakers Resting', 1891
Berthe Morisot Eugene Manet and His Daughter, Julie, in the Garden - 1883
The Moret Bridge at Sunset - 1892 Alfred Sisley The Moret Bridge at Sunset - 1892
Edgar Degas
Pierre-Auguste Renoir Pierre-Auguste Renoir - The Rowers Lunch -1880
Paul Cezanne Paul Cezanne, Tulips in a Vase, 1890-2
Later…Vincent van Gogh Vincent van Gogh - “the starry night” - 1889
All of these… Use optical blending—placing strokes or dots of bold color together to be blended optically Works similarly to pixels on a computer For instance, red next to yellow creates orange when blended by the eye
