11-17-17 Science Fair Hypothesis; Earth: The Inside Story Documentary

Do Now - Cambridge: Take out your HW (parent-signed Page 7 of Science Fair Packet) Begin reading the provided text about the Layers of the Earth. Take out the worksheet from Wednesday and continue answerint the worksheet questions. If you misplaced the worksheet, get another from the counter. As you are quietly working, I will come around to check for your parent signatures.

Do Now – Comprehensive: Take out your HW (parent-signed Page 7 of Science Fair Packet) Unit Test Retakers: Get your pencil and eraser and wait by the side counter. Begin reading the provided text about the Layers of the Earth and answering the worksheet questions. (These will be turned in) As you are quietly working, I will come around to check for your parent signatures.

Science Fair Project Assignment 2: Research & Hypothesis The hypothesis is another name for a prediction or inference. When you are writing the hypothesis you are trying to predict the answer to your question. What do you think will happen, (even before you start your experiment)? You should always give a reason for your prediction.

Science Fair Project Assignment 2: Research & Hypothesis All hypotheses should be written in an “If…then…because” format. “If (I do this,) then (this will happen) because (what research says)” The “if” section contains your independent variable, Followed by your “then” section which contains your measurable outcome or dependent variable, Followed by the reasons for your prediction derived from your research.

For example: What is the IV? What is the DV? Question: Does soaking the bean seed before planting it affect how fast it will grow? What is the IV? Soaking the bean seeds What is the DV? How fast beans will grow Possible Hypothesis: If I soak bean seeds before planting them, then they will grow faster than non-soaked seeds because soaking makes the hard seed covering soft.

Science Fair Project Assignment 2: Research & Hypothesis Directions: Attach this page to a separate TYPED document with your hypothesis in an “If…then…because” format. Then, further explain your research in 1-2 paragraphs. Your research should thoroughly explain the science behind how your independent variable is affecting your dependent variable. This is due Friday, 12/1/17

Science Fair Project Assignment 2: Research & Hypothesis Grading Rubric Project Elements 3 Excellent 2 Good 1 Fair Incomplete   Hypothesis Hypothesis uses proper format “If ___, then ___ because __” The “because” component references information discovered while researching. Hypothesis uses proper format or references information discovered while researching but not both. Hypothesis is a random guess. Hypothesis is incomplete. Background research Research is thorough and specific. Explanations of the IV and DV are clear. How the IV affects the DV is clearly explained. Research has some specifics. Explanations of IV and DV are given, but not completely clear. How the IV affects the DV is described but not completely clear. Research has little specifics. IV and DV are not explained. How the IV affects the DV is not explained. No background research is explained. Total Score / = %

Earth: The Inside Story As you watch the following PBS documentary about the Earth, answer the questions on the provided worksheet.

Exit Ticket What is one way that plate tectonics affect the Earth?
