Objective: Students will identify the restrictions placed upon immigration and the debate between science and religion. Standards: RH2, RH4, WHST4 Do Now: Define the new vocabulary terms nativism (p.604), Emergency Quota Act (p.606) National Origins Act (p.606) Fundamentalism(p.608), evolution (p.608) creationism (p.608) and speakeasies (p.609) Work Period: Sacco & Vanzetti video. Sacco-Vanzetti and Scopes “Monkey” Trial graphic organizer. Close: How did the Sacco-Vanzetti Case and the Scopes trial add to the paranoia of the Fundamentalists?

The two most famous trials of the 1920’s… Sacco and Vanzetti (p.604-605) Who? Italian immigrants who were also anarchists who disliked all forms of govn’t. What? Accused of robbing & murdering employees of a MA shoe factory. Where? Massachusetts When? 1927 Why? Because Sacco & Vanzetti were anarchists, the prosecution set an example by sentencing them to death. This case led to further paranoia for the Fundamentalists. Scopes “Monkey” Trial (p.608-609) Who? John T. Scopes What? Volunteered to teach evolution knowing the consequences would be arrest. Where? In Tennessee When? 1925 Why? It was outlawed in TN to teach anything that denied the story of Divine Creation. This case led to Fundamentalists’ power in the political realm declining.
