What do players want? ACCURACY MANAGEMENT FLOW CONSISTENCY

Professionalism in our Sport Following engagement with senior hockey coaches, we have committed to improving communication with team management (club and national squad). We are asking active umpires to commit their time for; Positive dialogue prior to the match to improve understanding during the match. Please arrive at least 30 mins before the match to enable this to happen. CONSTRUCTIVE two way feedback chat, following matches in order to improve relationships and consistency. Try to stay for a tea and chat after the match. This is for YOUR benefit!

Focus for Improvement: 5m infringement at FH situations around circle Discuss this with coaches/ captains before the match if necessary? Clarify your plan in relation to player proximity to FH. Ball HAS to move 5M or be touched by a defending player before entry into circle. Try to permit flow.. Subject to player safety. Sometimes the FH is the better option for the attack. Recognise and react! Try to avoid rewarding defence who conceded the foul the defending team should NEVER be rewarded for stopping play.

Focus for Improvement cont.: Discuss the most common umpire inconsistencies? Breakdown judgement. Ball Position at Free Hits Judgement of Aerial Balls Judgement of danger ball off the floor. Judgement of flow. Ball off foot/foot off ball? 5M encroachment around the pitch. Control escalation Stick obstruction.. More blown that actually occur. PC V PS we have to work together to get this correct Management of dissent

Sliding Challenges! Focus for Improvement cont.: Protective equipment at PC. Facemasks / body protection equipment etc. Use COMMON SENSE!!! When does the PC end, and changes to attack? Ball hits discarded equipment Management of this? Sliding Challenges! Consider pitch condition- factor this into your tolerance. Consider what the ‘offending player’ is trying to do? Player in possession vs tackling player

Areas for Development: FIH wish to promote a fast dynamic sport that is exciting for participants and spectators. Umpires contribution to this… ITS ALL ABOUT MEANINGFUL FLOW! Discuss: When do players become challenging? Recognising this happening and acting appropriately. Control escalation options.

Any questions?
