BRING SCIENCE BOOKS TO CLASS TOMORROW Science HW Due Tuesday Textbook page 591 Questions #1-9 BRING SCIENCE BOOKS TO CLASS TOMORROW

GLE GLE 0707.11.1 Identify six types of simple machines.

What is a machine? A machine is a device that makes work easier by changing the size or direction of a force A simple machine is a machine with few or no moving parts

The 6 Simple Machines Screw Wedge Inclined Plane Pulley Wheel and Axle Lever

Inclined Planes An inclined plane is a simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface. Inclined planes make the work of moving things easier. A sloping surface, such as a ramp. An inclined plane can be used to alter the effort and distance involved in doing work, such as lifting loads. The trade-off is that an object must be moved a longer distance than if it was lifted straight up, but less force is needed. You can use this machine to move an object to a lower or higher place.  Inclined planes make the work of moving things easier.  You would need less energy and force to move objects with an inclined plane.

Screw- is an inclined plane that is wrapped in a spiral around a cylinder The mechanical advantage of an screw can be calculated by dividing the circumference by the pitch of the screw. Pitch equals 1/ number of turns per inch.

Wedges Two inclined planes joined back to back. Used to cut or split and object. Wedges are used to split things.

Lever A lever is a simple machine that has a rigid bar that pivots at a fixed point, called a fulcrum. Levers are used to apply a force to a load. There are three classes of levers, which are based on the placements of the fulcrum, the load, and the input force.

First Class Lever- a first-class lever, the fulcrum is between the input force and the load . Common examples of first-class levers include crowbars, scissors, pliers, tin snips and seesaws.

Second Class Lever-The load of a second-class lever is between the fulcrum and the input force Examples of second-class levers include nut crackers, wheel barrows, doors, and bottle openers.

Third Class Lever-The input force in a third-class lever is between the fulcrum and the load. Examples of third-class levers include tweezers, arm hammers, and shovels.

Pulleys A pulley is a simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or a cable. A pulley needs a rope, chain or belt around the groove to make it do work. Examples, Blind cords

WHEEL AND AXEL a simple machine consisting of two circular objects of different sizes. The axle is attached to a large wheel. Fan blades are attached to the wheel. When the axel turns, the fan blades spin.

After Video Questions 3. What are the six simple machines? 4. What simple machines are found in a wheelbarrow? a. lever and inclined plane b. wedge and wheel and axle c. lever and wheel and axle d. inclined plane and wedge 5. What simple machines are found in a pencil sharpener? 1. A machine is a device that does one or more of the following three things: makes work easier, makes work faster, or ___________. a. uses a force b. is a push or pull c. changes the direction of the effort d. includes one of the simple machines 2. A compound machine is ___________. a. made up of two or more simple machines b. a tool that uses a force to move an object c. made up of a wedge and lever d. very expensive
