OBJECTIVES Discuss utilization of the nursing process for perioperative nursing. Describe scrubbing and circulating roles of perioperative nurse. Identify knowledge and skills required to perform scrubbing and circulating roles. SCR

SCRUB ROLE Responsibilities include: Supplies Instruments Maintaining integrity/sterility of field SCR

SCRUBBING KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Apply principles of asepsis. Identify emergency situations. Provide safe, efficient environment. Ensure patient’s rights, dignity, privacy, and confidentiality. Maintain organizational skills and manual dexterity. Perform as team member and take responsibility for own actions. SCR

CIRCULATING ROLE Responsibilities include: provide emotional support to patient prior to anesthesia induction perform ongoing patient assessment verify accurate and complete preparation of supplies, instruments, and equipment preoperatively document patient care SCR

CIRCULATING ROLE create and maintain a safe environment implement and enforce policies & procedures, prepare specimens coordinate nursing care from health care team members communicate information to other members of health care team and family SCR
